Me
I've been a Photobooth
artist since 1979.
I am keeper of the Photobooth Archive (additions welcome). I am the organiser/curator and host of the International Photobooth
Convention.
This page is a place for me to show the chronological history of my work and passion for photobooths. I'm also interested in anything remotely connected to photobooth pictures/machines/the business and the people who use them, so feel free to contribute your work or a news story you've spotted. Just a brief description and link will do. The date refers to when the story came to my attention not necessarily when it occurred.
It's my pleasure to have worked with the guys at photobooth.net so please pass on your work/story to them as well. They will appreciate it. They have the most comprehensive site dedicated to photobooths in the world and my page is in no way competition to them just an additional resource from my perspective.
May 2008
30th May, 2008: - Nakki Goranin on Chicago TV talking about her book "American Photobooth" http://www.chicagolive.com/wttw/wttws_chicago_tonight_american/
Thanks to Gary Gulley
23rd May, 2008: Advert - Every now and again you will see a advertising campaign using a photobooth strip or a series of pictures made to give the impression of one. BT have one such at the moment. 4 pictures made to look like a photobooth strip and folded so that it is the same size as one. The iconic image of the traditional "strip of 4" is still strong even though they are pretty thin on the ground in the UK nowadays.

15th May, 2008: Video - Low Water are a rock band from Brooklyn, NY, USA. They have just made a video
that is just people in a photobooth. Check it out on youtube here, it's cool. Thanks to Dave Rubin from the band.
Dave goes on to say "The actual photobooth is located at a bar called Lakeside Lounge on the Lower East Side of NYC. It's a great old machine that still prints on real photo paper. For the some of the shoot, I put up some foam-core walls so that people would feel like they were in a real photobooth. Then we took it on the road with us while we were on a little tour. We shot in Philadelphia & Pittsburgh, PA., Kent, OH., NYC & Brooklyn, and San Francisco, CA. Most of the people are friends of the band - several have been in other videos of ours. And there are a few (maybe) familiar faces: Laura Swisher (TechTV), Steven Smith (Fuse & VH1), Jared Cotter (American Idol & Fuse), Eater X & Crazy Legs Conti (Competitive Eaters), Rico Gagliano (Marketplace), Mike Gabriel (The Sermon), Ted Edwards (The Music Lovers), Alex & Heidi (Lowry) & Sarah Bowman (Rasputina & The Bowmans).
Low Water is working on our third record right now, and we're shooting a video for one of the new songs this weekend. This one is going to be a modern dance performance - very different from the photobooth! But it will include several of the same people."

April 2008
28th April, 2008 - TV programme "Embarrassing Bodies" Monday 9:00pm - 10:00pm Channel 4.
Christian Jessen, Dawn Harper and Pixie McKenna return to destigmatise common medical complaints. The doctors take to the road to find patients that need their help, aiming to raise awareness of symptoms that are often ignored because they are found in a private part of the body. The team had a photobooth set up for members of the public to photograph parts of their bodies, possibly intimate ones. Most likely a tool to help people to get started on the process of telling someone of their problem.

11th April, 2008 - Simon Armitage is a British poet, playwright and novelist. He has a new book out called Gig: The Life and Times of a Rock-star Fantasist
and it features a black and white photobooth picture of himself on the front cover, as he says, with a typical 80's comb over. Simon, who is in his 40's has decided to fulfil a dream and form a band. Good man!

18th Feb, 2008 - Nakki Goranins book "American Photobooth" is released. Excellent.
Here is the blurb written by Amazon.com
Product Description
A fascinating history of an American institution that includes an extraordinary collection of photobooth images.
"That a perceptive, dedicated, and sensitive artist like Näkki Goranin has rescued from oblivion so many amazing self-portraits created by amateurs confronting themselves in the fleeting privacy of humble photobooths is yet another miracle for which we can be grateful."—from the foreword by David Haberstich
Generally relegated to the realm of kitsch, the history and cultural importance of the photobooth has long been overlooked. Here, Näkki Goranin documents the invention, technological evolution, and commercial history of the photobooth with extensive illustrations culled from twenty-five years of collecting. Complementing this history is a powerful collection of heartbreaking, funny, and absolutely beautiful photobooth images. These often solitary figures—seeking freedom, confession, a thrill—are evocative of a lost time and place. Haberstich writes, "For anyone who assumes that photobooth pictures are perfunctory, utilitarian records at best, the range of emotions and moods portrayed by the subjects of [this] collection is a revelation." Over 200 color and black-and-white photographs.
About the Author
Näkki Goranin, a Vermont photographer and historical photograph collector, has had her work shown in galleries, movies, and magazines. A former artist-in-residence with the Vermont Arts Council, she owns three vintage photobooths.
